Numerous swelling pressure tests have been conducted to understand the swelling properties of bentonite which is planned to be used as a buffer material in repositories for the geological disposal of radioactive waste. In this study, in order to clarify the cause of the decrease in swelling pressure during the swell-in pressure test period, the change in wet density distribution inside the specimen during the swelling pressure test was observed by X-ray CT measurement. It was supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the collapse inside the specimen. Furthermore, in order to confirm that collapse is generated by water absorption, the swelling deformation test was carried out under various load conditions. As a result, it was confirmed that collapse occurs even under the load conditions that are equal to or slightly smaller than the swelling pressure. These test data are expected to be used for validation of coupled analysis codes for evaluating the mechanical behavior of disposal facilities during re-saturation period.

This study investigates the propagation characteristics of surface wave traveling in a random heterogeneous medium. For this purpose, ultrasonic measurements are performed on a granite block as a typical randomly heterogeneous medium. In this measurement, a line-focus transducer is used to excite ultrasonic waves, whereas a laser Doppler vibrometer is used to pickup the ultrasonic motion on the surface of the granite block. The measured waveforms are analysed in the frequency domain to evaluate the travel-time for each measurement point based on the Fermat's principle. From the ensemble of travel-times, the probability distribution is established as a function of travel-distance. The uncertainty of the travel-time and its spatial evolution are then investigated using the standard deviation of the travel-time as a measure of the uncertainty. As a result, it was found that the uncertainty is approximately proportional to the mean travel-time divided by the square root travel-distance.

Hight-resolution pollutant model embedded into Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is constructed. We focuses on Particle pollutants. Flow field is calculated using D3Q27 model of LBM and particle is calculated by Lagrangian method. Using this model, we discuss the change in concentration distribution when there is a huge building (GARUDA) in Jakarta as a application. As a result, we can find the relation of differences in particle density and differences in flow velocity due to GARUDA. When the velocity in the case w/o GARUDA is faster than the other, particle velocity in the case w/o GARUDA is reduced. And also, we can find the velocity near the solid boundary is underestimated and the particle density is higher than theoretical value. However, this model is valid far away from the solid boundary.

In order to clarify the influence of shotcrete in the underground facility on the groundwater chemistry, an in-situ closed test was conducted in the mock-up tunnel at the depth of 500 m. Brucite, Ettringite, Ca(OH) , Gibbsite, KCO, NaCO 10HO, SiO (a) and Calcite were identified as the dominant minerals affecting the water chemistry. Furthermore, the shotcrete constructed in the tunnel has a reaction capacity which can produce about 570 m of alkaline groundwater (pH12.4) saturated with Ca(OH). The estimation would improve the accuracy of prediction analysis of the long-term chemical influence of cement materials after the closure of the tunnel.

Saturated-unsaturated flow inversion program with adjoint method and least norm method was made to estimate saturated hydraulic conductivity and boundary conditions for multi-layers heterogeneous aquifer model. Vertical two dimensional numerical experiments assuming inclined ground consisting of three layers with different permeability were carried out using this program. Some inversion were carried out by changing the coefficient of least norm term to investigate the strength of constraints on the un-known parameters based on the reference value. The result show that it is possible to estimate the unique value of saturated hydraulic conductivity and boundary conditions for multi-layers heterogeneous aquifer model by the method.

Pre-grouting of shafts and galleries had been conducted during the construction of MIU in the aspect of reducing water inflow. After excavating GL.-500m gallery, a post-grouting was performed on section of the pre-excavation grouting area under high water pressure condition (max: 4MPa). The post-grouting experiment was performed outside of the pre-grouting zone with designs, applying colloidal silica grouting material and complex dynamic grouting. It was estimated that the inflow after post-grouting was reduced by 1/100 of the case that pre- and post-grouting were not performed. These results indicate that the applied combined pre- and post-grouting methodology is effective in reducing water inflow and it can be applicable under high water pressure condition. Then, this paper states the theoretical evaluation of relationship between reduction of hydraulic conductivity and the grouting zone is very convenient and useful for grouting design and estimate of water inflow.

This study examined the mechanical characteristics of rock segments and backfill materials and analyzed the stability of the drift that is supported by the rock segments and gravel backfill. The results confirmed the technical aspects of the formation of the rock segments and the effectiveness of the planned efforts to further reduce the amount of cement used.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency is conducting the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (URL) project in Mizunami, Gifu, in order to establish scientific and technical basis for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. This paper comprehensively describes the result of groundwater flow modeling using data of hydraulic responses and hydrochemical changes due to URL construction. Technical know-how and methodology of hydrogeological monitoring and groundwater flow modeling were presented for characterization of hydraulic heterogeneities in fractured crystalline rock. Furthermore, effectivity of data acquisition of hydrochemical changes in groundwater for validation of result of groundwater flow modeling was indicated.

In the rational tunnel support design, numerical analysis is powerful tool to know the estimation of the behavior before tunnel construction in the case of the special ground condition and limited similar construction. In order to evaluate the support structure quantitatively, it is necessary to understand the effect of the inhomogeneity of rock mass to the tunnel support stress in advance. In this study, tunnel excavation analysis considering the inhomogeneity of rock mass was carried out. The analysis results were compared with the stress measured in the tunnel support in the Horonobe underground research laboratory. As a result, it was revealed that the local stress measured in the tunnel support can be simulated by considering the inhomogeneity of rock mass stochastically. In addition, this study evaluated the effect of the inhomogeneity of rock mass to the tunnel support stress quantitatively by processing analysis results statistically.

In the process of underground space development, enormous information is collected in each developing stage, such as investigation, plan, design and construction. It is important to properly feed back these information to design and construction in order to realize rational design and construction of an underground space. And more, these information also become basic data in a plane of structure management. However, it is almost impossible that it is controlled in the individual ability, since collected information quantity is too enormous. For the purpose of intuitively controlling and processing these enormous information, we devised the system for the data management by freely moving in virtual reality space. In this paper, the basic structure of the system constructed by adopting WEB3D and RDBMS, is described, and the practicability is verified.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been constructed the Underground Research Laboratory in Hokkaido. In the shaft excavation, length, direction and aperture of geological observation are measured and analyzed in order to estimate rock permeability around lining. In this report, correlation between frequency of cracks and rock permeability based on crack tensor and stereology was discussed. Prediction equation of rock permeability from the frequency of cracks on the shaft wall was also proposed.
